Our Summer in the Psalms
Our Summer in the Psalms
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
Psalm 1:1-4
During the month of June and July we will be traveling through the Psalms to discover the story of God’s people and his faithfulness toward them.
The book of Psalms is an intricately designed collection of poetry that recounts Israel's history and God's covenant promises. It’s a book made for a lifetime of careful contemplation, where we can learn about the importance of prayer and the acknowledgment of pain, as well as the power of praise and fulfillment of prophecy.
There is no better place in Scripture to learn the vocabulary of prayer than in the book of Psalms. God’s people have used psalms as a guide for worship and prayer since before the time of Christ. The range of emotions found in the Psalms helps us find words to express ourselves to God in every circumstance.
Our hope then is that as we travel through the Psalms we will discover a language and story that give us a greater glimpse into who God is and who we are as his people. Psalms will be our liturgy as exiles awaiting the now and not yet kingdom of God.
90 Day Reading Guide
Use the following plan to read through the psalms over the next 90 days. One way to do this is to read the psalm of the day in the morning and night as Psalm One says. Then to meditate or chew on it so that you really let the holy spirit speak.
